What Zapier’s terms say about renewal, cancellation and fees

Every line below is quoted from their own page. None of it is unusual, and none of it is an accusation — most agreements read like this. The point is that a clause you signed knowingly costs you nothing, and the same clause unread costs you a renewal term.
Automatic renewal
The agreement continues on its own unless you act. This is the clause that most often costs a business a full extra term it did not intend to buy.
“(e) Auto-Renewal : UNLESS YOU DOWNGRADE OR CANCEL YOUR SUBSCRIPTION PRIOR TO YOUR RENEWAL DATE, YOUR SUBSCRIPTION WILL AUTOMATICALLY RENEW FOR ANOTHER SUBSCRIPTION TERM ON THE SAME PLAN (OR IF NO LONGER AVAILABLE, A SUCCESSOR PLAN) AND FOR A PERIOD EQUAL TO YOUR THEN-CURRENT SUBSCRIPTION TERM.”
What to do: Put the renewal date and the notice deadline in a calendar today, not the renewal date alone.
Non-refundable fees
Money already paid does not come back if you leave early, even where the service stops.
“Except as expressly stated in these Terms or as required by applicable law, Fees paid are non-refundable, and payment obligations are non-cancelable.”
What to do: If you are prepaying a year, ask what happens to the unused portion on termination.
Early termination charge
Leaving early has a price of its own, sometimes the whole remaining term accelerated into one invoice.
“You must pay any outstanding Fees covering the remainder of the Subscription Term as an early termination fee in connection with any termination under the EU Data Act.”
What to do: Get the exit number quantified before signing, not after you want to leave.
