The short version
You can read everything published here, and run the free check, without an account, without giving us an email address, and without being tracked. We do not run analytics, we do not run advertising, and we do not sell or share personal information. If you buy something, Stripe handles the payment and we keep the order.
What we collect
Reading the site. Nothing beyond what any web server records in order to operate. Our host, Vercel, logs requests including IP address and user agent for security and reliability. We add no analytics, advertising, or tracking scripts of any kind. There are no third-party cookies here, which is why there is no consent banner to dismiss.
The free check. The questions you answer are evaluated during the request and then discarded. They are not written to a database, not logged, and not associated with you. Closing the tab ends it.
Signing in. The operator console is private and sets a session cookie. That cookie exists to keep you signed in. It is not used to profile you.
Buying something. Checkout is hosted by Stripe. Your card details go to Stripe and never reach our servers. We receive and keep the order itself — what was bought, when, the amount, and the email address you gave — so that we can deliver it, support it, and meet our tax and accounting obligations. Some products are sold through Gumroad instead; there, Gumroad is the merchant and its own privacy policy governs the sale.
Writing to us. If you email us, we have your email address and whatever you put in the message, for as long as the conversation is useful.
What we do not do
- We do not sell, rent, or trade personal information. There is no circumstance in which we would.
- We do not run behavioural advertising or share data with ad networks.
- We do not buy personal data about you from brokers in order to enrich a profile.
- We do not use your data to train models.
Who processes data on our behalf
A small number of vendors, each for a stated purpose: Vercel for hosting and request logs, Supabase for our database, Stripe for payments, Gumroad for payments on products sold there, and an email provider for transactional messages. Each holds only what its job requires.
Publishing to other platforms
We publish our own articles to LinkedIn, Bluesky, Mastodon, Pinterest, Reddit and the search engines. That publishes our writing, not your data. Nothing about a visitor to this site is sent to any of those platforms.
How long we keep things
Orders and the records supporting them are kept as long as tax and accounting law requires, currently seven years. Server logs follow our host’s standard retention. Anything else is kept only while it is being used for the purpose it was given for.
Your rights
You can ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted, and we will do it. If you are in the EU or UK, the GDPR gives you those rights explicitly; if you are in California, the CCPA does, including the right not to be treated worse for exercising them. We apply the same standard to everyone regardless of where they live, because running two standards is how the weaker one wins.
Deletion has one limit, and we would rather state it than bury it: we cannot delete a completed order record we are legally required to retain. Everything else, we can.
Children
This is a service sold to businesses. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. We do not apply changes retroactively to data already collected under an earlier version.
